A walk down memory lane: can previous revolutions like the railroad help us prepare for the AI revolution?

The world has gone through multiple technological revolutions, such as those driven by the steam engine, the railway, the automobile or now  the transistor. Some argue that AI  by itself may have impacts of similar magnitude to those of these previous revolutions. If so, what can we learn from past revolutions in terms of the impacts on business and the economy, society and our daily lives? AI is described as the next frontier for competitive advantage. How is Europe faring?

Over the past year ambitious AI plans have been announced across Europe, from Macron unveiling in March 2018 a €1.5 billion strategy to make France an AI leader, to Angela Merkel in November 2018 laying out a €3 billion plan to turn Germany into an AI powerhouse.
People such as Kai Fu Lee, former head of Google China, believe that despite the investments, Europe continues to lag behind the US and China while others feel that Europe is on track to capitalize on its strengths. What are the tools at our disposal to frame and direct the moral trajectory of AI?

In October of last year Amazon made headlines after its AI recruitment tool showed bias against woman. In this case it was a “fairly easy” catch. What happens as AI is deployed across all aspects of our lives, from driving efficiency to increasing productivity, to detecting fraudulent behavior, to making judicial decisions, to providing medical diagnosis, just to name a few. How do we ensure that it is functioning fairly and reliably? Where, at what levels and through what conduits, corporate, policy, etc., can we actually exert influence on the development of AI to ensure an ethical and conscientious AI?
